The appeal hearing in the case of Richard Paey in Tampa, Florida today was a major event in the progression towards compassionate pain care in the United States. The media converged on the event, turning it into a circus. Organizations represented included AP, Fox, ABC, local news, St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Tribune and NPR. All appeared fascinated by issues at stake. An editorial in the St. Petersburg Times yesterday absolutely blasted this ongoing atrocity visited on the Paey family by the state of Florida.

Mr. John Flannery argued Richards case brilliantly, engaging the entire panel of judges in a passionately argued cruel and unusual argument, supplemented by an astonishing record of misconduct by a rogue prosecutor. In three consecutive trials, Mr. Paey's trial was marred by perjured testimony of which the prosecutor was fully aware right from the start.

The attorney representing the state of Florida, arguing against Mr. Flannery, came across as less than convincing. He undermined his own position by citing case law that favored Mr. Paey.

Linda Paey was present with her three teenagers to support Richard's case. The photographers were all over them, as they conducted themselves with dignity.

In summary, this was Pain Relief Network's finest achievement to date. Ms. Reynolds has handed the pain movement another resounding success. Win or lose, the issue took a giant step forward today.
