Further reflections from Sandra - MM @ maelstrom.stjohns.edu - Posted to listSeve: 2/22/2001; Posted here: 6/16/2001; Revised: 5/20/2003

Hi Jean, I'm still here. . .haven't talked much, but reading every post. The naltrexone is working great! I'm finding it easy to moderate with the naltrexone. If I want a drink, I get it - after one or two drinks I don't want any more. Even with a refrigerator full of beer, one or two does it.

And if you remember my history, pre-MM days and even after I'd drink until the beer was gone. . .now I drink only one or two beers about twice a week. That's all I want! And, the truth be known, I'd just as soon drink NA beer, Miller Sharp has become my drink of choice these days (it tastes better than the Miller Lite's).

One of the things naltrexone can do for you is that you learn to drink like a moderate drinker again - I was a moderate drinker for ten years before becoming a heavy drinker for five. I'm back into the moderate drinking mode again. I don't crave the alcohol, the urges are gone, I can take it or leave it and usually leave it by choice.

I'm learning to deal with life's stresses again without hitting the bottle, and  enjoying the pleasures of waking up in the morning feeling refreshed. I'll be on naltrexone for a year, so ten months to go. My bad 'habit' of heavy drinking will be broken long before then.
